Every year, billions of glass bottles are discarded worldwide. Globally, the amount of glass waste produced each year is substantial, with estimates suggesting around 130 million tonnes of glass are produced annually and only about 27 million tonnes (approximately 21%) of this glass is given new life by upcyling and other methods , leaving a significant portion as waste .

This glass waste ends up in landfills, contributing to environmental degradation and resource depletion. Globally, glass recycling rates vary, but many countries struggle with low recycling percentages, highlighting the urgent need for innovative solutions like upcycling.
